If you listen to Sean McVay enough, you know that he does not hide his cards. I think that it is deliberate, but either way he is pretty transparent when he wants to be. When you listen to him talk about Goff, I think he speaks sincerely and without hesitation that he is McVay's QB. In the most recent Rams' All Access ESPN podcast, you can hear McVay talk about Goff and how they are going to be the future of this team going forward. Goff will absolutely be resigned, and the Rams are going to pay, as ZN says, the going rate. Smart teams like the Eagles do this earlier, rather than later. As I said, I would do it today and know what my budget and salary cap looks like moving forward with Goff under contract (assuming it is an extension) for the next seven years. Then you go about building your team from there.

As for what Goff has proven so far, he will enter this season at the age of 24 (the same age as Baker Mayfield btw, and Carson Wentz actually started a game as a rookie at the age of 24), the youngest QB to ever take his team to the Superbowl. He bested Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes, Dak Prescott, Russell Wilson (2x), and Drew Brees in the NFC CCG last year alone. He has led the Rams offense to the best and second best offensive statistical seasons over the last two years, won more games (15) last year than every other QB, and this is not even the most important reason. Goff got markedly better every year at Cal, statistically and from just watching him. He has gotten dramatically better every year as a pro. This type of improvement curve cannot last forever, but there is no reason not to expect Jarod to improve this year over last. McVay sees this, and had given Goff his unwavering endorsement that he is the Rams' future.

I think that Goff cannot do as well as what some other QBs can do, like Wentz/Prescott/Mahomes/ as far as making plays when things break down. But what Goff does do very well is what McVay demands. Delivering the ball with "timing, anticipation, and accuracy," and he does this as well as anyone. And he is only going to get better and more comfortable in this offense over time. He also appears to be a team first guy, zero issues off the field, his team mates rave about him, and you don't have to worry about what he will say or do off the field. Given how much the Rams invested in him, how much they spent to get him, and where they would be without him, it makes perfect sense to extend him now and be done with it. It is going to happen eventually, and it is not going to get cheaper. Show JG that you are committed to him, and he will return the favor IMO.
