Ok, maybe I'm a little biased here since I`ve been a huge David Montgomery fan, and I was pulling for the Rams to take him in round 3 for some time now.
I hope McVay and Snead know more than I do and they will prove that taking Henderson over Montgomery was the correct decision. My thinking is they are not as concerned about Gurley and his health as much as some are and they were looking for a complimentary weapon to use with Gurley and in this offense.
However, If Gurley is on borrowed time, I have a hard time believing Henderson will turn out to be the better pick over Montgomery. I guess only time will tell.
Kudos to the Bears for drafting Montgomery. He looks like a great fit for them!
I think it’s a fine line between drafting a back primarily as Gurley insurance versus primarily as a complimentary piece to the offense.
Montgomery only fits the first objective. My guess is there is quite a bit of concern about Gurley but they feel they can manage the situation by reducing his workload. Between Brown and Henderson that should be doable.
In the meantime, Henderson is a great complimentary piece when Gurley is playing. While he’s not the optimal Gurley insurance type of RB, I bet they feel a lot better with him in the house if Gurley did have to sit weeks out.
