The Los Angeles Rams haven’t given a clear indication all offseason of Todd Gurley’s status moving forward. They’ve said everything from limiting his workload to him still being the focal point of the offense, yet won’t disclose if he’s completely healthy.
The strongest indication of Gurley’s health might’ve come on Friday night when the Rams drafted Darrell Henderson out of Memphis, trading up to select him at No. 70 overall. He was arguably the most explosive running back in the draft, giving the Rams yet another weapon on offense.
After being selected by Los Angeles, Henderson told reporters on a conference call which running backs he models his game after.
“Growing up, I always used to watch Chris Johnson,” he said. “But as I got older, I was more of a Kareem Hunt kind of guy.”
Henderson is a slasher-type running back who bursts through holes when he finds a crease. That’s similar to the way Chris Johnson played, albeit with much more speed than Henderson. Hunt also showed those sorts of traits with the Chiefs, ripping off big runs in Kansas City’s offense.
One of Henderson’s best assets is his versatility as a runner, receiver and return specialist.
“I’m able to catch out of the backfield. I’m able to return kicks. I’m able to run the ball, run hard and do a lot of things that some backs in this draft, they couldn’t do and I did better than them. I think we’re going to be something special in L.A.,” he said.
He’s excited to get to L.A. and learn from Gurley, who he’s “watched a lot of”
“I’m just going to go in there and do what I’m supposed to do and work hard. It’s always good to have somebody to learn from. I’m going to learn from Todd Gurley and make sure that I’m doing my job,” Henderson said.
