Gary really could drop, he may need surgery

Report: Rashan Gary reportedly has labral tear, may require surgery

The UM product may require shoulder surgery eventually.

Michigan’s Rashan Gary has been one of the most polarizing draft prospect atop this year’s draft class. Projections have Gary going anywhere from the top five to towards the bottom of the first round. The discrepancy in how draftniks view and value Gary is rooted in his phenomenal athletic traits against his lack of production in college.

Well, a third factor has entered into his draft profile. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Gary is still dealing with a torn labrum that will have to be managed—or even may require surgery after the 2019 season.

"Ian Rapoport

#Michigan DT Rashan Gary, one of the draft’s top defensive players, has a shoulder that was flagged, sources say. It’s a labral tear from college, and most believe he can play this season, then possibly have surgery afterward. It will likely have to be managed or harnessed, tho"

The shoulder injury isn’t exactly news. Gary missed three games of the 2018 season with a shoulder injury, originally reported as an AC joint issue. He was also limited in several other games with the injury.

However, this news paints a much more serious situation. We saw how much a partial labral tear affected Ezekiel Ansah during the season, and how painful it looked when Ansah fully tore his labrum near the end of the season.

Though Rapoport suggests Gary should be able to play in 2019, it’s clear this labrum issue will come up eventually, if not immediately. It’s another red flag for a top-tier player, and could be another reason teams don’t take a risk on him in the top 10 now.

Report: Rashan Gary has labral tear in shoulder
Posted by Josh Alper on April 23, 2019, 7:04 AM EDT

Former Michigan defensive lineman Rashan Gary’s ranking in this year’s draft class has varied quite a bit from pundit to pundit.

Gary’s physical tools made him a top recruit out of high school and continue to intrigue scouts, but his production in college wasn’t at a level equal to that potential. That leads to different ideas about how he’ll fare in the NFL and there’s reportedly an injury to factor into any evaluation.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Gary has a labral tear in his shoulder that dates back to college. The feeling reportedly is that Gary can play with the injury as a rookie before potentially having surgery, but that he’d need to play with a harness and/or otherwise manage the shoulder to get through the year.

Bills defensive end Shaq Lawson came into the draft with a similar injury in 2016 and the word after he was taken in the first round was that he’d be able to play through it. He wound up having surgery in May after aggravating the injury, however, and missed the first half of the season as a result.

By the end of the week, we’ll know which team is rolling the dice that things will play out differently for Gary.
