I think he was fighting a shoulder injury most of the year that happened in the Minnesota game. But I agree he was good in 2017. I just think overall he is better suited inside. But again I think it will be largely dictated by what happens next Thursday and Friday. His ability to play DE and NT gives them more versatility in their selection(s).
What we agree on: yes MB can play both NT and DE. It's good that they have him and his flexibility. 2018 was an off year. Your view as to why makes perfect sense.
I personally think he was better at DE in 2017 than at NT in the 3 previous years (he moved to NT when AD became a starter).
My own response to the discussion is that IMO some people are a little down on him because of a subpar 2018. This is a nuance on my part, not a heavy point. I think he was off in 2018, which we agree on. In terms of playing DE, as I said I still think his best year as a Ram was at DE in 2017. I think that gets forgotten.
But none of that means I am "against" him going back to NT. If they landed a top DE prospect, that would make perfect sense.
Meanwhile, here's the optimal scenario at DL.
* AD is even better with a camp under his belt. Is ready to go week 1.
* Brockers returns to form.
* They draft a top DL, either NT or DE, who is capable of starting in 2019.
* Both Joseph-Day and Franklin-Myers (the hyphen crew) step up in their 2nd year.
Check all those boxes and the Rams have a top-notch DL.
And there was much rejoicing.
