I place high value on the ability to cover and even more value on the ability to cover from the slot.
CGJ has covered and played from the slot for 3 years for nearly all his snaps. There might be some adjustment but a player who can cover from the slot can slide to the boundary when needed. Boundary to slot does not happen so often.
CGJ explodes. Watch the highlights and you can see this pretty quickly and easily. He needs technique work on pursuit and tackling but he is a beast near the line supporting versus screens or run plays.
I'm looking for that guy who can do most things in the secondary. With JJ3 being versatile--covers tight ends, deep--adding another player not pigeon holed to a specifc secondary role (see Rapp) gives the defense a sizeable advantage versus an offense imo.
We need DBs more than anything imo. Well other than a better QB which is not going to happen.
I agree with you. The two guys I mentioned also have extensive experience covering from the slot and have done it at a high level.
I like CGJ because of his size. IMO that makes him more versatile overall but if we're going on pure coverage ability, I honestly think Savage may be the strongest there.
I also agree on Rapp. If we select him, we'll have to move JJ3 to FS. Doable, but not optimal.
EDIT: That's from what I've seen and read. But FWIW, PFF metrics give Savage the 2nd highest coverage rating in this safety class. I think CGJ was 4th with Thornhill 5th. I really like all three...along with some others. I like this safety class quite a bit which is why I'd be hesitant to take one of them really early.
There will be starting FS that turn out good available into the 3rd.
