Maybe it is an opportunity. They can match and lock Brown up long term if they feel good about him potentially being the feature back for games in a row over the next few years.
This is an offensive team that runs to set up the pass. The RB is a centerpiece for the franchise. All QBs play better with a strong offensive line and a strong running game. Goff is no exception. Todd Gurley is an elite franchise back with durability concerns and a large contract locked in for years. We saw the lack of carries in playoffs. The Rams need a #2 RB who is cheap and capable of being a centerpiece. That is possible to find but a tall order. The Rams I imagine will be asking themselves do they feel good about Brown starting multiple playoff games?
Brown is trustworthy in pass protection. Goff has commented on that ability. He runs with power and can do some damage on screen passes. For an NFL running back looking at his 2nd contract, he does not have a lot of wear and tear.
It is a smart visit invitation by the Lions. Brown has talent. The Rams don't have a lot of cap space. They need to make a big decision on RB #2. This might force their hand and maybe they let him walk just not to be forced into a decision early. Do they want to commit to Brown or let CJ Anderson fully test the market and come back cheap? Do they want to see if they can do better than both Brown and Anderson? Do they want to wait and see who slips in the draft? It is a crucial decision. They really need to get it right.
