Star players do not have to succumb to team "leverage."
Bell sat out a year. Brown dictated where he would be traded by making contract demands.
To me those are just 2 good examples---with top star players, the whole idea of team "leverage" is empty. Some people thought that it would be possible to franchise AD and make him play for less than market. All AD had to do in response to that was hold out and demand to be traded.
Fortunately, with the Rams, (1) management saw the light, and (2) AD is a genuinely committed team player who is worth the money not only in terms of his production but in terms of his mindset and character (AD ain't no AB ).
