Kind of like the micro fracture surgery. There's not a whole lot of evidence that it does much good. Sounds like he had significant cartilage damage with the ACL. They may have removed part of his meniscus. This doesn't grow back for the most part and the bones can rub together over time. Stem cells might be way to try and grow back some cartilage - in the same way that microfrature surgery attempts to.
In the end it might be a pain mitigation issue - how much pain can Gurley play with? He probably won't play preseason at all and might not practice at all during the regular season - and only do walk throughs and just play on game day ala Barron. That wouldn't surprise me.
I was at the point of considering stem cell treatment because I was having tremendous pain in my right knee. Two other people on my track team had successfully had the treatment and they recommended it. I contacted a former teammate who is an orthopedic surgeon and she actually recommended acupuncture. I was shocked because I've always looked like acupuncture as nothing more than voodoo; in fact, I regularly made fun of it if someone brought it up.
Nonetheless I underwent four treatments and was basically pain free after two sessions. I had two more as a precaution and had no trouble for two years until I reaggravated something this passed autumn in a cross country race.
