It seems we're on the same page for quite a bit on this edge issue.
A couple of attempted answers, further thoughts, and questions for you in order...
I don't see Ford as a one year wonder because in 2016 he had 10 sacks, 12 TFL, and 17 QB hits... he was getting to the QB then. Last year he got hurt. I'll give you that, for some reason I thought he hadn't done much before this year. Sorry about that.
I suspect as you do that KC may have trouble affording both Houston and Ford. If Houston became free, I'd swoop on him. Oh yeah
I don't know for sure that KC is switching to a 4/3 D but I spy'd out what KC fans are saying and they seem to think they are. I guess we'll see....I agree, there was talk about a switch before this last season already.
I haven't seen a lot of Za'Darius Smith. How does he compare to Fowler? He recorded 45 tackles, 8.5 sacks, a forced fumble and two pass deflections this season. Was 17th in QB pressures this year among edge rushers with 60. Not much of a run defender, but how many edge rushers are these days...So IMO he would be an upgrade.
If a Clowney/Ford/Houston - basically a premier rusher - became available, why are you against that just because it will be expensive? Yeah, for the most part.Im also concerned with the future and what a giant contract to a edge rusher would do. Spend that money on Saffold and Matt Paradis, a top 3 graded OC and a zone fit.
If we end up going with resigning Fowler, I'd still be concerned about the edge if we didn't draft another one high. Ebu I'm about done with and I don't want to leave it to hoping that Obo works out. Fowler teamed with Shaq Barrett would look nice, so would Fowler and Za'darius Smith or Preston Smith, maybe even Terrell Suggs for 1 year.
