.........is knowing just how difficult it is to just make it to a Super Bowl....so many things have to go right for you....minimal injuries, the ball bouncing your way,
calls going your way. So when you actually make it there, it's crushing to lose because you never know when you're going to get back.
We were all thinking we would be in for a string of Super Bowl appearances during the GSOT years....and here it is 17 years later since the last Rams Super Bowl.
The Rams are saying all the right things: "We'll be back"....just like every team who plays in a Super Bowl...especially the losers.....but the Rams could actually have better teams in the next few years and still not make it back to a Super Bowl due to the luck factor.
That's depressing... and it's why it's so devastating to miss out on a championship when you have the opportunity.
Fortunately there's a lot to be optimistic about... a smart young coach and GM, and a talented roster...so hopefully the Rams next Super Bowl appearance will be a lot sooner than 17 years.
What undermined the GSOT does not exist anymore.
So yeah on the field they looked unstoppable but then only made 2 appearances.
You know why?
Their front office was a sham and basically a mess. It was dominated by in-fighting, Armey was never the same GM he was without Vermeil, they lost talent and never replaced it. It was a pretty house but the plumbing was bad and the floorboards were rotten and the people in charge of it could not agree on anything.
I would never use the GSOT as a model of what happens to a team''s superbowl chances. See to me the GSOT does not prove that even the best have a hard road back. On the contrary, to me they're a model of how quickly you can descend from the heights if management is fundamentally incapable of doing things right. Rotten management, rotten results.
Does the fact that THIS management team is more stable and capable than that one GUARANTEE them anything? No. But they are just not going to have the same kinds of problems (problems which were multiple deep and widespread).
