Without being inside the guy's head, there's no way of really knowing whether or not he was intentionally "coasting" during the regular season. I would think the truth is something similar to what Mangini said last week on First Things First (I think that was the show). He said that for some of these veteran guys who have been around for a while it can be hard to "get up" for every play of every regular season game. It's not that this is a conscious thing or they're intentionally "coasting," it's just that the grind and the "been there done that" feeling suppresses the kind of fire that the younger players sometimes have.
But now it's the playoffs. Now it's win or go home. Now the glory of a championship is tangible. And especially for Suh, this is not a "been there done that" situation at all. And in those moments, the elite get that bonfire burning inside them in a way they didn't have and maybe weren't even aware they didn't have in the regular season.
Don't know if all that's true about Suh or not, but it sounds plausible.
Don’t know, don’t care, Eternal.
Suh’s play in these playoff games is dramatically better than in 15 of the 16 regular season games.
For $14 million the Rams expected and deserved the level of play in the regular season that we’re seeing now. Could easily have given us the HFA, for one thing.
Naturally, I Hope Suh gets his ring for obvious reasons.
But after this year, I hope it’s sayonara for him.
Yeah, Suh is playing harder now.
AND it's perfectly plausible to suppose that he has more to give now precisely because he *coasted* during the dog days of the season. Maybe, at 32, after 9 years in the trenches, he can't play this way all year. Or maybe he was playing "hard," but found the additional gear his talent affords him.
In any case, I think a really good argument could be made that, regardless of performance in the regular season, the Rams' players - certainly their big-money stars - will earn their huge salaries in the playoffs, or not. Incredibly, the Rams are now good enough that making the playoffs isn't the issue. (Not that I, for one, took it for granted, but I imagine the supermajority of us expected the team to make the playoffs.) The real test started w/that first playoff game - and Suh has shown up big-time. Maybe that's what should matter.
