Bad call resentment happens in every sport at every level.
Good coaches ALWAYS coach their teams to realize the 1 play doesn't determine a game, that champions rise above them.
And it actually played out IN THE FREAKING GAME! As we all know, the Saints still had chances to win the game. But, according to reports I saw, Payton and some players talked about how something went out of them after the call. Like somehow it cast a pall over them that prevented them from winning even after winning the OT coin toss.
That is an emotionally immature coach letting sour grapes affect his team's performance down the stretch of a championship game. That is NOT what good coaches do.
Looking forward, one wonders about the effects. Chips on the shoulder can be motivators. But sour grapes rarely lead to inspiration. If they spend next year grousing about that 1 call, they might really struggle. Winning in the NFL requires heads on straight, and Payton's attitude is not a step in the right direction.
