Like a lot of things, players rarely ascend with such smooth consistency one game/year after the other. Through 11 games he was lights out, no question. Against Chicago he got mauled- and in part because the OL collapsed that game and their play calling wasn't great. But he did not play well. BUT it was on the road against the league's best defense. So there is a bit of a curve there to grade him on. Then he followed up with a mediocre at best performance at home vs. Philly. Same thing- the OL had a lot of issues. But he did miss passes and make some bad judgements. But two in a row. Uh oh...

But ok, so then he played very well overall vs. Arizona and SF- a combined 126.7 QB rating in those games. But it's largely dismissed because they were bad teams. OK, they were. And the running game with Anderson stole the spotlight. Maybe if he'd put up a 150 rating the noise would have subsided.

Goff missed 2-3 throws vs. Dallas on Saturday but he largely made good decisions, made some very clutch throws with great timing, and did what McVay wanted. They were running like a hot knife through butter so I'm not going to complain that he didn't have 300+ passing yards and 4 TDs. And he sealed the win with a smart scramble for a 1st down.

At the end of the day, to me the kid should be judged on his two years body of work since McVay arrived. And to me it says a lot:

25-8 record (including playoffs)- outstanding...
QB Rating- 6th
TD- 4th
Yards- 5th
Completion %- 21st
TD%- 7th
INT%- 9th
Yards/Attempt- 4th
4th Quarter comebacks- t-3rd
Game winning drives- t-8th

He's not a top 3 QB in this league. Not yet. And maybe he never will be. He has more to learn and get better at. But right now at age 24 he's in the top 8. And I'm not sure how that can disappoint anyone- especially long-suffering fans of this franchise....

I would say that pretty much summarizes what I think too.

Plus as I have been doing in other posts before this, I also want to point out that you can find bad games in the third year of every qb we consider good to great now. I showed the details on that with both Brady and Brees.

Having bad games his third year is no guarantee that he will continue to progress, of course, but it is absolutely NOT any kind of indication he won't.
