The military knows you can only stay with the same leadership for so long, then it goes stale.

Good companies know this as well.

Does that dynamic fit the NFL?

I'm not sure; but it sure seems so.

McCarthy didn't forget how to coach. This is the same Superbowl and 8 playoff seasons HC.

Sometimes I think an HC can just grow stale and players stop listening. Or, he has spent so long establishing and then maintaining certain systems that he doesn't want to change them. Or loyalty to certain assistants has taken priority over the need to change some things.....things those assistants can't do.

Interesting question, Rock.

I think it depends on the HC. For example, Belichick, Reid, and Carroll have considerable longevity yet are at the top of their games.

I think players respect adaptability in their HC’s. Schemes must remain current AND effective. Theoretically, if the HC keeps developing his players, and keeps putting them into best positions, and keeps winning? No reason that HC can’t succeed indefinitely.

As an aside, modern HC’s must be adept while wearing many hats.

Good PR. Gotta keep press and public on his side.
Hire and direct top asst coaches
Excel in developing and motivating modern players
Stay current on existing O and D trends
Communicate with his GM as to specific types of players desired
Instills a winning culture
Players and coaches both trust and respect him

There’s a lot more to it, some things more tangible than others. That’s a lot of balls to be constantly juggling, and yet a successful HC must do most, if not all of them, huh?

Looking around the league, obviously not every HC can handle all of those facets.

We are so fortunate to have Sean McVay. Sigh...

Personally? I don't think McCarthy is necessarily a "lost it" guy
