Nothing to lose other than yards. If he makes the 1st they lose. If he misses they move the LOS. Again-same thing. Again-he makes it and game over. He likely makes the 1st attempt if they are not offside and game over. The reason he misses the first attempt is that the rusher is almost on top of the ball.
Not sure what would have happened if they continued to be offside thus moving the ball closer and closer to the goal line-assuming the kicker keeps missing. Maybe the Chargers would then attempt to run it in and be stuffed and then on to overtime. If you assume the kicker would keep missing as a result of the offside rush then there is no downside to intentionally doing it. If he makes one of those kicks then he was likely to make it w/o the offside in any event. And that is exactly what happened. I don't see a downside here.
