Not because of some magical spell. Better teams get the bye and home field advantage.
Having a first round bye and home field advantage is huge when it comes to getting to the SB. If I had to guess, the Rams just didn't maximize their time off during this bye. Probably were rewarded with extra time or a lighter schedule because of the big win going into the bye. Not to mention possibly taking the Lions a little for granted.
I doubt any of that would be the same if it was the playoffs.
