In all the uproar, I forgot Brown was an impending free agent. If they were going to let him walk, and if they don't expect him to sign a huge contract thus not garnering much of a comp pick, it's not a huge hit to them to cut him now.
That said, it also means they have to fill good about whoever the backup will be in case of injury. It doesn't make sense to make an "all in" like trading for Fowler while simultaneously hurting yourself in case of a starting OL injury.
