That short ferry ride across the Algiers is good. Agree about Royale.
Hotel Monteleone is a nice place to stop in for a drink and hear some great music in the evening as well. Still have never scored a seat at their Carousel Bar... Mr. B's Bistro is a great pit-stop too.
Also if you watched the HBO show Treme (highly recommended) there's a great walking tour of that area where you will learn a lot about the city's history and a few sights from that show.
