Does he have time remaining on his contract?
How old is he?
Lots of variables...
If you have time on a first contract, was a proven pass rusher...sure.
But who is going to give that up?
Another variable. If you trade for a guy--and they are usually NOT traded in the first 2 years of their rookie deal--it can be a high pick with a higher rookie contract (like Peters). Peters will cost the Rams 9 M next year. Now on paper anyway he's worth that because you want the high contracts to go to special players, since you can only carry a few high contracts.
Or you end up trading for a guy already on his 2nd contract in which case he's already a bigger cap hit and on your short list of big contracts.
In contrast though the lower 1st round picks the Rams would take themselves would cost around 2-3 M. That's ideal. You get a solid starter for bargain pricesd (assuming they do what we expect and take a good player).
So yeah a lot of variables.
Sometimes it's not good to trade away picks. Sometimes it is. It depends. The variables (such as the ones we're discussing) count here.
