Totally agree.

I think what happened here is that Snead deferred to McVay in that first draft. Let McVay have his pet guy.

I wonder what the scouts thought.

The big thing for me was Everett was overdrafted. No need to reach for him in the 2nd round. He wasn’t good value as say JuJu.

I don't think we should start doing the whole who do we blame thing between Snead and McVay. We know that they collaborate.

In Everett's case, they had a entire article last year of the process of how he was drafted. Snead had actually found Everett the year before and presented him to McVay as a perfect fit for what he was looking for.

I don't see how we can pin this on McVay needing his pet guy or a rookie mistake. IF someone between the two had to be at fault, it's Snead.

McVay didn't need a certain guy; McVay needed a TE and he wanted one early. The fact that the TE's name is Everett is because that's who Snead found and who McVay signed off on. There is absolutely no evidence of Snead deferring at all.

I think he went in the 2nd round because he was a McVay favorite.

In the beginning of the process McV may have just needed a TE but I think as it got closer to the day, he got fixed on Everett.

Collaboration often means the coach gets his way if he's adamant. So for example we know that Boudreau was banging the drum for Robinson. That's natural to a process where the GM defines himself as finding what the coaches want. That doesn't exempt Snead from any "blame" but it's built into the process, particularly in the higher rounds.

So Snead is absolutely part of the "blame and praise" equation and had been all along but in a system like that, coaches can get amped on a guy.

....

I never said Snead was absolved of any blame. My whole point was that Everett was a McVay favorite, and Snead OKed it.

McVay was locked in on a TE, Engram was his first choice, and Everett was his backup plan.

My criticism was that they didn't let the draft come to them and Everett was overdrafted. Snead knew that from experience, McVay didn't have the experience in this situation.

No one thought Everett was a more highly rated player than JuJu before the draft.
