It is a risk and I hope he makes the PS but you are right. A good team should only keep maybe half their 6th and 7th round picks at most.
If the Rams are sneaking Demby through to the practice squad--and in retrospect that is probably what they intended to do all along--they obviously picked an interesting day to do it. The day before the first Sunday games is probably the right time to cut a 6th rounder you want to keep. Get the exemption for Donald, if you activate him for game 1 then Demby goes to the ps, same if you activate Donald for game 2.
In terms of Monday's game, the Rams usually had only 7 active linemen last year too. So having 7 for Monday is not a big departure. That raises the question, what do most teams do. Do most teams have 2 or 3 backup OL active on game days? If 2 is a minority, how many do it that way? Are the Rams exceptional in doing it that way? Checking that out would be exhausting. But I did a quick check of New England for 2017 and they had 7 OL active for the 2 games I looked at. So having 7 is not a huge exception. I suppose it's only an issue if this is one of those rare times where a team loses 3 linemen in one game.
