When the team performs well, McVay (or other coach) was brilliant to rest and protect his starters.
When the team looks shaky, McVay (or other coach) didn't have the team ready because they didn't get live reps.
Honestly, while I don't like 4 preseason games and I don't like not getting starters some reps, you have to decide how your going to play your hand. McVay decided he would not join in the game until the season.
The NFL spends so much time on "trying to protect players" from how the game has been played (well, we know they are trying to protect their pocketbooks), but refuses to look at ways to protect players through less meaningless games. Why? $$$$$
The solutions always seems to be add more games in the regular season. But, doesn't that just open things up for more injuries? And do we really need more football games? I think the market is saturated due to all the Thursday night, Monday night, Sunday, Sunday night, Saturday night games already.
I will say that Pat Kirwan has an intriguing solution but it adds a game. Play a 17th game but play those games in non NFL cities. Add a playoff team and give only 1 team a first round bye.
Pardon my ramble...
