It might still be an extension if I have this right:
If AD get a 5-year, $110M extension that includes a signing bonus of $30M I think a pro-rated portion of the signing bonus counts in 2018 (since he was paid it in 2018) even though the extension doesn't kick in until 2019. If this is correct then AD's salary for this season remains the same but $6M of that signing bonus would count against this year's cap, making his cap hit in 2018 $12.9M instead of $6.9M. (IIRC a signing bonus is split evenly over the course of the contract but can't exceed 5 years of pro-ration. So $6M a year for the first 5 years = $30M.)
I think that's probably right.
But if they do it that way they are doing things differently with Donald than they did things with Cooks.
