the number of snaps that Whitworth will play full speed during the regular season, by what percent is the risk increased if he plays a series or two in the preseason games?
1%? Probably less than 1%.
And almost every team rests starters in PS4, so he should have no problem being fresh for the season opener.
I was on the fence when McVay decided to sit starters against the 49ers at the end of last year.
But after the rusty, out-of-sync performance in the playoff game, I fell off the fence into the headshaking side.
Do. Not. Like it. And it's not just fans' opinion vs a coach's opinion, as some are saying.
It's a LOT of very successful other coach's opinion vs our coach's opinion.
It's what we've seen as a norm in decades of football vs our coach's opinion.
You play your starters for a series or two in PS1 and PS2.
Then you let them go for a full half or even 3 quarters in PS3 as a dress rehearsal.
Then you use PS4 to evaluate the bottom of the roster before the final cutdown.
That's a balanced approach between injury risk, and getting your team ready for the season.
That's pretty standard, and I find it hard to believe that McVay has suddenly found a better way.
