This rule is being blasted by fans and media alike as one of the worst rules the NFL has ever implemented.
Can't believe the NFL didn't test this @#$%& rule out on preseason first like they usually do for this type of rule.....the rules committee is killing the league.
I don't have a problem with the rule, per se. I do see the need for the league to take steps to increase player safety.
I do, however, have a problem with the on-field officials making these calls. The players and plays are moving so fast...and the hitting so violent...that the officials are simply reacting to the aftermath - not necessarily the play that they may not have had the perfect angle to observe. The criticism comes when the replay shows the defender making a perfectly-formed (though violent) tackle.
I believe that they'll eventually need to handle this via replay booth where officials are constantly monitoring players for head injuries. In college football, for example, the on-field officials can flag a defender for "targeting," but can't eject them unless the replay booth confirms the call. Even that policy has its problems, but it acknowledges that those bang-bang plays are too fast for the on-field officials to process.
