I dunno, starting as a rookie might have been too much for Smart, and they didn't retain Walker. I think that NT is just a huge question mark (behind Suh) but they seemed to be interested in continuing with Smart and obviously they drafted Day, so, maybe they think they have a player.
...
Well, Smart is under a rookie contract and they signed Suh, so IMO, they might have played into Walker not coming back. Rams also have Omarius Bryant at 310lbs, so he's much bigger and Smart might have been miscast as a NT, you could look for Smart playing Donald's position that might be better suited for him.
That could put Smart, if he sticks at all, behind both Suh and Easley.
I figure they keep at most 7 DL and this is what they have right now:
Donald, Suh, Brockers, Easley
plus
John Franklin-Myers: DE 6-4 288
Ethan Westbrooks: DE 6-4 287
Chunky Clements: DT 6-2 301
McKay Murphy: DT 6-4 295
Sebastian Joseph-Day: DT 6-4 310
Tanzel Smart: DT 6-1 295
Omarius Bryant: DT 6-3 310
So that's 11.
It looks like the candidates to back up Suh at NT are Clements, Murphy, Joseph-Day, Smart, and Bryant.
If they're keeping Franklin-Myers and Westbrooks, that's 6, with the 5 just listed competing for probably one spot.
They list Womac and Lawler as DEs but they are really LBs.
