a flat rate would be easier ..quicker and more beneficial to team and player..
The players generally want the most money as do most of us common Joes. Even if they don't need it, they want it for respect and status.
If I was an agent/attorney and I knew you were paying me a flat rate, I might be tempted to persuade you to settle for a deal lower than I think I could get you just to be done with it quicker. A flat rate incentives getting a deal done quickly but that may not be in the best interest of the player. An agent's job isn't to worry about the team's interest.
Tying the agent's salary to what the player receives creates an incentive to maximize the deal the player gets. If the player doesn't want the max deal, he is free to instruct his agent that that is not a priority. Some players have done that...but it's rare.
