I agree the term has probably evolved to mean that but as such its pretty meaningless because it can mean different things to different people. The term franchise used to be synonymous with elite. But nowadays its sufficient to be good to be one.

In terms of measures not that I'm aware of but that doesnt mean it cant be done. At some point there was no qbr rating and then there was. For example, a franchise qb must have the following qualities..

1. Start at least 36 games
2. A .500 winning percentage or better
3. A QB rating of 85 or better

I just thought of these off the top of my head. This standard may be weak and/or we could add a few more but after we agree on the qualities we remove a lot but not all of the subjectivity.

2 things contribute to this.

1. QBs are hard to come by so if you believe in your guy you stick with him and set him up to succeed.

2. Of course it's subjective, just like drafting in general is. You commit to your qb, you believe he will develop, you build around his strengths. You can't mail order a guy with perfect specs and guaranteed success.

"Franchise qb" just means "he's our guy." And that can change, as everyone knows. Smith finally arrived. Eli declined. Sometimes you eat the bear. Sometimes the bear eats you.
