Eventually, this period of the crazy will end in the NFL, and in every other sector of the economy. But Ryan's new contract shows it's got some more life in it yet. As I've mentioned many times, I'd rather see the players get it than the Suits, but no one should make that kind of bread, IMO, unless everyone is at least in the same ball park.

Upton Sinclair once said:

“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.”

Now, we can read that in many ways, but the way I see it playing out in this case? We've been trained not to see how absurd it is to pay one guy thousands of times more than another guy, even though no two humans in the world are that far apart in intelligence, physical ability, wisdom, energy, "hard work done," "want to," creativity, and so on. Yeah, we're all different. But not by that much, as far as our capacities go. And there aren't enough hours in the day to support such a pay gap. No one does the work of dozens, hundreds, thousands or tens of thousands of other people, all by themselves.

Zooming in closer, I think the league will eventually see that the difference between a Ryan and next tier, or even the one under that, isn't really worth millions, and it's definitely not worth setting up a gap of thirty million or more between the top and the bottom . . . when pretty much all players who reach the NFL can really, really play the game.

Of course, if they want to switch things around a bit, and have star QBs being the humans, and the loyal grunts on Special Teams being crustaceans, or some other "lower order" being, then, well, maybe they can make that case. But not when we're talking about an all-human league, and I extend that same analogy across all sectors, all economic strata, regardless of industry, top to bottom.

In short, the massive inequality in compensation isn't warranted, if we're talking about the supposed benefits of physical, mental and emotional differences between humans, nor is it warranted based on things like effort, persistence, tenacity, time on the job, energy, etc. etc. Again, one would have to limit the big money folks at the top of the pyramid to humankind, and everyone else to different species of one kind or another.
