He may have been a bust (I have seen bigger). Did not have the best hands in the world. Made us cringe when catching punts. A bit too small. Just never was a huge weapon...........BUT...He never seemed to pout or loaf. I was at the Jets game in NY in 2016, when he played quite a bit. He was pushed around by bigger CBs and LBs but he never quit. He was never a behavior problem child. I sorta hope he finds his groove (Unless it affects the Rams!)
He was fearless, actually. Didn't shy away from contact, or going over the middle, or working hard for extra yards.
I have no idea about his real height and weight. These things are often exaggerated in the NFL. But he was probably 5'8" and 170 soaking wet. So he was pretty much always going against guys waaaay bigger. It was as if he were in Boy's Club and had to face college players. But he kept on keeping on.
I’ve gotta disagree about the fearless part, Billy.
He was often seen cutting for the safe sideline on the end of sweeps when a cutback inside was clearly there for more decent yardage. And I suspect that at least some of his concentration lapses as a WR were due to knowing that a defender was close.
I have no desire to kick the guy as he leaves the building, but I don’t want to see him sanctified undeservedly, either. I wish him all the best, but it was the right thing for the Rams to trade him.
Oh, I agree that he needed to be traded, though I think it's yet another indication of several really dumb moves by management. First, in moving up in the draft to get him, when he wasn't really worth a 1st rounder, period (You can find speedy, shifty guys much later, including guys with better hands). Then, failing to find a way to utilize him, which is the same problem they had with Quick . . . then, extending him . . . then, trading him for peanuts.
I'm just saying I admire his toughness. Far from "sanctifying" him, I just like his guts for such a little guy.
Next time the Rams seek a similar player, though, I hope they start with the third round, at the earliest.
I completely agree with your last reply, Billy. Nothing to add, actually.
