Sullivan is not that old, and when he was out last year Blythe did a creditable job of replacing him.
On the other hand, I don't see a legit backup at LT. Shouldn't tackle be a higher need than center?
Well, I would argue that they need a center because, Sullivan IS that old (he's 34 in August), he's on a 2 year, and Blythe is way too physically limited to be a starter--though yes he's a nice back-up.
The odds of getting a decent LOT after round 2 are very very bad.
I just don't see 34 as being all that old for an O'lineman. And that the sides agreed to a 2 year deal is telling to me.
I'm sure you see it differently but it tells me that they see him there for the next 2 years which IMO lessons the urgency of finding a potential starting center now.
OG on the other hand is an urgent need now. Not only for depth but also because both starters will be free agents after this season.
Agree on OT...
Well okay. Name all the 34+ year old centers in the league then.
There is a chance he misses time or is gone next year, in which case, Blythe won't cut it as a multiple game starter. IMO it's not the kind of thing you just chance. (BTW the 2 year deal allows them to cut him with 3 M savings in 2019. Most of the money is in 2018.)
Here's the thing though. Chances are, we're arguing about a 6th round pick. If there's a center who has value in the 6th round, I doubt they scoff at it and instead move on to all the other highly valued 6th rounders the draft is abundantly offering them.
