When my son was on the recruiting trail in 2013 I jumped in with him we he visited Alabama. At the time Alabama had a monster line Chance Womack, DJ Fluker and of course Two time outland trophy winer Barrett Jones Center. I met all of them. I thought Womack was going to be the next John Hannah, I was wrong, Fluker was huge I thought he would of had a better NFL career than he was having. Jones, excellent human person was soft, my son crushed his hand in a handshake, (knucklehead move on his part) and when I saw Jones he had a ton of baby fat in his chest and arms. There was a rift on the team in Alabama because Jones was getting all the awards and he was known as the 5 th best lineman on his team. I know I blogged about this, reporting to the board that I did not want him and when they picked him and said he would be out of the league in 3 years.
OL in general. The Jones story you tell is interesting, but, I also think Jones just kept getting hurt. Who knows how good he was and you might be right.
Jones aside, I said OL in general, what I mean is the risk of taking first round OL has gone up. It used to be they were the safest 1st round picks. Here's OL taken in round 1, 2012-2016. How many are hits? Btw I don't count it as a hit if a guy is drafted as a left OT but then is moved to OG or ROT. That's not a bust either, but a disappointment.
Many of these guys are not living up to their draft status. Whereas, as I said, in the past, used to be 1st round OL was the safest pick there was.
