The Rams are a far better team (on paper) than they were two months ago. But the obvious cost is in draft capital with no selections now in the top 86 picks in this Draft. So how has Snead and co. done in drafting players outside the top 85 overall (2012-2017)? What can we anticipate from the 2018 class based on the past 6 seasons. Note: not including undrafted free agents, where the Rams have a pretty decent track record.
Total draft selections: 33
Busts/Non-Contributors: 11
OL Rok Watkins, LB Aaron Brown, C Barrett Jones, DB Brandon McGee, DE Michael Sam, DB C.B. Bryant, T Mitchell Van Dyk, QB Garrett Gilbert, DE Martin Ifedi, WR Bud Sasser, FB Sam Rogers
Contributors/Backups: 12
RB Daryl Richardson (690 yards, 38 catches in 2 seasons)
WR Stedman Bailey (96 catches in 3 seasons)
C Demetrius Rhaney (game day backup for 32 games 2015 and 2016)
LB Bryce Hager (solid special teams player the past 3 years)
OT Andrew Donnal (21 games, 6 starts in two seasons)
QB Sean Mannion (current #2 QB )
WR Mike Thomas
LB Josh Forrest
TE Temmarick Hemingway
DT Tanzel Smart
WR Josh Reynolds (11 catches as a rookie, presumably WR4 this year)
LB Ejuan Price (primarily practice squad as a rookie)
Some starting experience: 7
WR Chris Givens (started 25 games, 76 catches, 1,267 yards his first two seasons)
RB Zac Stacy (excellent rookie year before being pushed down depth chart and then out after two years)
CB E.J. Gaines (15 starts as a rookie, 26 games played)
S Maurice Alexander (41 games, 23 starts before midseason release in 2017)
OG Cody Wichmann (24 games, 18 starts in two seasons)
WR Pharoh Cooper (26 games played in two years; putting him here since he's their primary KOR/PR)
LB Samson Ebukam (part-time player as a rookie, competing for starting OLB spot in 2018)
Starters: 3
K Greg Zuerlein, TE Tyler Higbee, S John Johnson
So what does this say? Statistically, if the Rams end up with 8 picks most likely 5 or 6 will fall into one of the top two categories, either non-factors or pure backups. 2 will likely become either part-time/shorter term or eventual starters.
To me if the Rams get one real starter and two quality backups out of the 8 picks they have now they'll have done a good job. Landing players once you get outside the top 100 is really hard. Could be a reason the Rams try to package a couple of their 4th rounders and get back up into the late 3rd round. Or at least move up from the late 4th to the top of the 4th.
How does it break down if you do it this way:
3rd & 4th round, considered separately.
Rounds 5-6, considered separately.
