Jets rescind offer to DT Suh after Johnson's talk with Maccagnan
By Ralph Vacchiano | 6:52PM

ORLANDO -- The Jets had a huge and surprising offer on the table to Ndamukong Suh. But upon further review, they took it back.

Jets owner Christopher Johnson made that stunning announcement on Sunday evening, saying the Jets rescinded their offer to the 31-year-old free-agent defensive tackle. He and Jets GM Mike Maccagnan discussed the offer and decided that Suh "didn't seem to be in keeping with our longer-term plan."

Johnson wouldn't go into many other details about the decision, but added he wasn't involved in the decision to make the offer in the first place. So it sounds like after hearing about the move -- and possibly the generally negative reaction -- Johnson decided he needed to step in.

"Saying I 'stepped in' is somewhat overstating the case," Johnson said at the annual NFL owners meetings at the Ritz Carlton hotel. "But in discussion with Mike, looking into what our plan is, it became apparent to the two of us that this just didn't work."

There are a lot of reasons why it likely wouldn't have worked with Suh, most notably that the Jets have been trying to systematically add younger players to their roster, while the 6-foot-4, 305-pound Suh is entering his ninth NFL season. He also comes with a well-earned label for being a dirty player, and he has the suspensions and fines to prove it.

Even worse, after he was released by the Miami Dolphins, reports emerged that he was considered a bad influence in their locker room, something the Jets certainly don't need after purging most of the players from the locker room mess they endured two years ago.

All of that, of course, begs this question: Why make a big offer to Suh in the first place?

"I think that I had a lot of discussion with Mike about this and I think that our thinking just changed a bit," Johnson said. "That's where I have to leave it."
