Well, 99% of the time I wouldn't. Not even for half of the draft picks.

It would have to be an extraordinary situation for me to do that, and I'd have to check all kinds of boxes before I did.

If my scouts and staff were virtually unanimous that the talent levels plunged before we got to pick, that's one big box. Probably the biggest. The second one would be: How far away do we think we are from competing? One player? Two? Three? Third would be the hardest to quantify, but I'd still want some educated guesses: What is next year's draft like? How many elite players are likely to come out early, be seniors, etc.?

If, however, they told me that the draft has six or seven elite players, I don't make the trade. I let the draft come to me. And if they told me that the draft has more elite players, I'd try to trade down to the edge of that elite pool. Ten total? I want more draft picks and to move to the #10 spot. Twelve players, the #12 spot, etc. Of course, you have to have a trading partner, and that doesn't always happen. But I'd try to make it happen. And that extra pick or two gives us more ability to wheel and deal. I might try to turn an extra 2018 3rd Rounder, for instance, into a 2019 2nd, if I could.

The Jets gave up waaay too much for three spots, IMO.
