In real life, James Stewart was a decorated WW II bomber pilot. Stewart flew 20 bombing missions over Germany including one over Berlin-after wrangling combat duty when commanders would have preferred to use a movie star for morale building work at home. As a squadron commander, he flew many dangerous missions when he could have sent others instead, recalled Robbie Robinson, a sergeant who was an engineer-gunner in Stewart's B-24 squadron. Stewart rose to colonel during the war.======================================
Also, another fav of mine,
Lee Marvin, was wounded on IwoJima
shot in the butt(iirc)...Clark Gable after his wife Carol Lombard died also became a bomber pilot
(kinda wanting to die he was so broken up bout her death)...what a great group of honorable
movie stars that served when they could easily get out of it.
btw-
John Wayne got out of soldiering...but he "played one on TV".
Amazing that the "Duke"...was one that didn't go.
One would think the Duke would've been 1st to go......since JohnWayne embodied American courage in the movies.
Illusions at every level.
