The Los Angeles Rams flew somewhat under the radar at the NFL Scouting Combine last week when it came to prospect meetings. The Rams hardly came up when players discussed which teams they’ve met with, but that’s to be expected.
While there’s certainly plenty of interest in defensive prospects, the Rams appear to have their eye on one offensive playmaker. Dante Pettis out of Washington told NFL.com that he’ll meet with the Rams in Seattle, though he did say he thinks “a lot of teams” will talk to him at Washington’s pro day Saturday.
Pettis sat out drills at the combine due to an ankle injury, and he won’t participate in the Huskies’ pro day, either. There’s no denying his athleticism, but it would have been nice to see him work out in some capacity before the draft.
As for his fit with the Rams, he’s a speed threat on the outside with great return ability. He set the all-time NCAA record with nine career punt return touchdowns, showing how versatile he is.
And although he admits he wouldn’t have touched John Ross’ 4.22 40-yard dash, he did say he can run a 4.37 when healthy. That’s plenty of speed to win outside.
If Sammy Watkins leaves in free agency, the Rams could very easily target a wide receiver in the draft, especially one with the speed to blow the top off of a defense. Pettis would be a nice target in the middle rounds.
