I don’t get the quandary.
I think the quandary is value of positions.
S is simply less valuable than a WR. If they both had elite production last year it wouldn't even be close that Watkins would get the tag.
Also, ease of replacing adds to the quandary. If we're judging by the past 10 years, finding a WR with an elite skill set is very difficult to do. Finding that in a Safety is a little easier.
Your point of difficulty of finding top players in the two positions is a valid one to me, dz.
But I’m proposing extending both of them. One is a near elite FS and those don’t grow on trees. Just pay him and move on.
The other is a potentially elite WR. Emphasis on “potential”. $10 million is my limit, and yours is $11.5 million, if I recall. Neither of us is within sniffing distance of the $16 million tag figure.
So, how about a one year $10-11 million prove it contract? By then the results should speak for themselves and a big second contract will either be justified or not.BTW, Watkins is unlikely to go to a team via FA with either a better QB, HC, or a better playoff roster. Staying here for one more year would make a ton of sense for him.
There is no way, in Watkins' first chance at FA, is going to take a one year prove it deal. No way. Not that it doesn't make some sense to me, but it would make zero sense to him.
I want him back but unfortunately I think he's gone.
