McVay is allowing his assistants to leave with promotions. Classy.
McVay is promoting from within. Both smart and classy. Future talented asst coaches will love to work for such a HC. There will never be a shortage of eager applicants to work for McVay.
Yeah, let’s don’t kid ourselves. This is a better opportunity for LaFleur in his pursuit of a HC position someday. Let’s wish him all the best.
About the perceived difficulty of getting quality future OC candidates under McVay? Hogwash. It’s a chance to work under a brilliant O mind for a year or two. That’s priceless. True, it’s probably a short term assignment, since McVay seems unlikely to give up playcalling duties. Why should he? But what a springboard to the next OC opportunity this would be!
Here’s my take on future asst coach candidates. Who wouldn’t want to come to a team that’s winning and where asst coaches are recognized and are being quickly rewarded with promotion opportunities?
And same thing for FA candidates. Great coaches, great teammates, great locker room, winning, and annual playoff appearances. Not to mention being offered a competitive salary.
If I were a talented coach or FA player, I can assure you that the Rams would be high on my interview priority list.
