I could be mistaken but I believe lateral moves are defined by not only Position Title but also by Job Description.

By taking over an entire offense, calling plays, etc., LeFleur is getting greater responsibilities in overall job duties even if the title is the same. My understanding is, that qualifies for it not being considered a lateral move.

Thus, McVay had to let him go.
