You have a chance to close out games, you eliminate any chance of other team winning. The Chargers cost themselves the post season on a loss against Jacksonville with this punt it away and hope for the best approach.
Payton did EXACTLY THAT (fetal position) by running the ball on first, second AND third downs before going for it on 4th.
He made poor play calls starting on 1st down and it nearly cost him. If you are going to be aggressive then be aggressive from the jump. He paniced, first he tried to draw them off side then said "the heck with it" and went for it.
He got very lucky...
