Years ago I read the summary of a study on "performance anxiety" (aka "stage fright" ). There were some interesting findings...
- There is a statistical difference between your mean/average performance of a task and that performance when the perceived stakes are higher.
- The difference in performance can be negative or positive
- When properly practiced and prepared at something you are good at, there is a statistically significant likelihood you'll do better than your mean when operating under higher stakes
- The inverse of the above statement is true -- you'll do worse than your mean performance if you are not properly practiced and prepared
The bad news for the Rams this week: apparently we aren't practicing because of wildfires. The good news: I guess McVay's even keel approach will help with any potential sense of the high stakes of this game.
