Been thinking about this for a while. My hunch is that McVay uses these opportunities (being up by 2+ TD's) to put plays on tape. Plays that opposing coaches are going to see during film study. So, he's trying to break tendencies and/or show new play designs which can be used to "set up" future opponents.
