I glanced in on the NFL Channel last night because, you know, my team is going well.
It was INUNDATED with Eli talk. Shocked, emotional rants. "Oh, my GAWD! This is terrible! How could they?"
They had some former NYG center bloviating. And another guy who never played with Eli who kept his head down as if he were speaking respectfully at a wake.
All because a QB who doesn't show much remaining capability ain't gonna start next week?
All teams fortunate enough to win some titles go through the moment of parting with aging heroes. All of them. It is inevitable. Sometimes, it's done slickly. Sometimes not.
In this case, it is nothing more than a decision to start a different guy over a QB who has ALWAYS been inconsistent, even in his glory years. They didn't cut him. Or trade him to the Browns. He was just benched for 1 game. By a coach who will soon be fired. Hell, there's every chance Manning will outlast the coach and be starting again next year.
I dunno. The damn hype machine. It's permanently set for overreaction. Gotta have a crisis. Gotta have something to screech about. What's that over there? Blow it up and drive it into overdrive. No matter how trivial.
What I guess I will never understand is how millions of people don't quickly grow tired of all the silliness and unsubstantial hype. I mean, they actually know better. Don't they?
