As I understand it the Rams play a 1-gap 3-4 where the front 7 are each responsible for a gap. Aren;t these roles essentially the same as they;d be in a 3-4? If so the switch shouldn;t have much of an effect.
The benefit of this 3-4 is to plant some doubt in the opposing offense about who the 4 pass rushers will be on any given down (although the Rams almost always add Quinn to the 3 DL so they aren;t getting maximum value out of the new scheme).
