If only the NFL had someone whose job it was to guide the league successfully through choppy waters.

Someone who could communicate persuasively and firmly with the owners and herd the cats.

Someone who had the wisdom to deal appropriately when players are in the spotlight with drugs or violence.

Someone who could head off budding controversies before they become a blight between the league and some of its own fans.

Someone actually worth millions of dollars in annual salary.

But alas...
