I never DIDN'T believe in him. I never had doubts, not even during last year. Before the draft I was saying that I was fine with either Goff or Wentz as the #1 pick. I just thought they were completely different kinds of qbs and either one was okay with me. When the Rams were clearly leaning toward Goff, I embraced that. Nothing that happened in 2016 changed my mind because I found out how un-ready Air Raid qbs are for the NFL and so he was greener than most and had a much steeper road to being pro-ready. Even in the middle of disastrous play when he started I just looked for good signs and they were there. I was kind of benignly and optimistically in wait and see mode. Then after the pre-season and early 2017 games, I just saw that he had grown up a lot between 2016 and 2017, and that he was clearly a franchise type qb (not the same as elite...that is yet to be determined IMO). In terms of the mental/emotion make-up for the game, he's got that. We knew that from the way he survived his first year at Cal.
In terms of just the artistry of the thrower, he may yet turn out to be the best Rams qb since I started following the team in the 70s. IMO his pure throwing talent is just THAT good.
In terms of reading defenses seeing the field and always being a step ahead mentally when the bullets are flying, he's a work in progress. Not sure how far he will go when it comes to that. I don't have any particular reason to expect a low ceiling...though there will probably be some bumpy games before that matures. (He's very different from R.Wilson when it comes to that, who seemed like he was born with that stuff.)
In terms of his "come from behind in the 4th quarter in close games" skills (which are very important in my view of qbs), it's just impossible to say yet.
So I would say he IS a franchise qb RIGHT NOW. Just a young one. How far he develops or how fast he develops into a mature one? That's unknown. But I ain't sweating it
