It was built for the Olympics back in the 1930s. They did not envision it as a football stadium to begin with. Its a wonderful place and they give tours on Saturdays and the inner workings are very interesting.
Carroll Rosenbloom tried to buy the Coliseum when it was controlled by the State but they wouldn't sell. He was going to update and remodel her and make her a great stadium and his HQ for the Rams.
When the deal in Anaheim came up, CR had had enough and liked the deal to cash in on growing the area around Anaheim Stadium.
It fell apart and the Rams were given an opening to move when Gene Autry sued the City of Anaheim and won.
