Goff has come down to earth the last couple of games. We can chalk it up to strong defenses, but he still has been missing open guys especially bad on deep throws.
This game in London will be a good barometer to see where he is in his development. Some analysts believe that McVay has made Goff look better than he is and now that defenses have got a better read on what McVay is doing, Goff is being exposed as a below average game manager QB. I’ve heard Goff called a poor mans Andy Dalton. He runs out of the pocket only to throw the ball away or run out of bounds. He’s not extending plays and making big throws outside the pocket anymore when he escapes contain.
The Cards D is below average against the pass, so this should be a good opportunity for Goff to play well. It was obvious that McVay was not happy with Goffs performance in Jax. Neither was I. If the Rams are gonna be a real contender this year Goff must raise his game back up and this game will tell us a lot about that happening.
It's too soon to be approaching it that way. This is not a big game for him and he may be in a slump for a while. That just happens. I don't think it's the kind of thing we can put under a microscope. If it continues he will come out of it, and he could come out of it and slump again. It's a process, he is just going to be inconsistent, and the MAJOR fix to everything will come in the next off-season. Having said that nothing prevents him from bouncing back up again this season. It's just that no one game will define a forever fixed or forever lost condition. Heck for that matter at times he could be all over the place, up and down, in the same game.
He;s already the only Air Raid offense qb to ever make it to continuing starter status in the NFL. The Air Raid offense just puts guys THAT MUCH behind from the start. He won't be at Wentz's level IMO until year 3.
....
There is a long term and a short term view on this.
I appreciate your view from a long term perspective, but in the short term if Goff goes into a slump, as we both agree that he may, then the team isn't going to come close to the playoffs this year.
While its certainly an acceptable viewpoint to take that going to the playoffs this year isn't all that important in the long term, many of us are very much hoping for it, if just to at least get our feet wet after so many years.
Just a different perspective, thats all. Both are fine.
I don't know that I agree with the short term perspective.
In your opening post, you state that Goff has come down to earth these past two weeks. That could be characterized as a mini slump.
And yet, the team is one dropped Kupp pass away from being 2-0 over that span. Mind you that's against two top 10 defenses.
The Rams appear to be pretty close to being a complete team which means that it's not all on the QB.
All that to say, I think they can make the playoffs even without Goff being a top QB this year.
